1. Confirm access and indexability
Check that important pages return successful status codes, are not blocked by robots.txt, do not carry unintended noindex directives and declare the correct canonical URL. Make sure essential text and links are available in the rendered page rather than depending on an interaction a crawler may never perform.
Review crawler controls separately. For example, OpenAI documents OAI-SearchBot for inclusion in ChatGPT search and GPTBot for potential model training. Allowing one does not require allowing the other. Google uses Googlebot access for its Search AI features.
- Robots.txt allows desired search crawlers
- XML sitemap lists canonical indexable URLs
- CSS and JavaScript required for rendering are crawlable
- Internal links use normal anchor elements
- Duplicate hosts and URL variants consolidate correctly
2. Establish definitive entities
A system should be able to determine the organisation's preferred name, website, contact details, people, services and service area without reconciling conflicting facts. Use consistent visible information and connect the relationships with appropriate Schema.org markup.
Structured data should reflect the page rather than expand it with invisible claims. Unsupported ratings, invented service areas and personal profiles attached to the wrong entity create noise. A smaller accurate graph is more useful than an impressive but ambiguous one.
3. Cover the decision journey
List the questions a customer asks while recognising a problem, comparing approaches, checking credibility and choosing a provider. Assign each important intent to a page with a distinct purpose. Thin pages aimed at slight keyword variations are unlikely to strengthen the overall system.
On service pages, make the audience, problem, method, outputs, expected change and limitations explicit. Add FAQs when they represent genuine questions. On insight pages, show the reasoning, evidence and first-hand perspective that make the answer worth citing.
4. Audit corroboration
Search beyond the website. Check business profiles, directories, professional profiles, media coverage, reviews, partner pages and relevant industry sources. Record factual inconsistencies and identify important claims that exist only in the organisation's own copy.
Authority development should strengthen real expertise. Publish reference-worthy material, contribute informed commentary, keep important profiles accurate and pursue relationships that can produce relevant mentions. Volume without relevance provides little defensible value.
5. Measure a repeatable baseline
Record organic visibility, indexed pages, conversions and local performance. Add a controlled set of AI prompts across the main discovery and comparison journeys. Track appearance, description, cited sources and competitor patterns using the same method over time.
Treat the result as directional evidence. Generated answers are variable, and platform referral data remains incomplete. A readiness programme is successful when the underlying information becomes clearer, stronger pages earn visibility and qualified discovery produces useful actions.
